Retro game challenge ds video5/15/2023 ![]() ![]() The story revolves around you getting transported back to the 1980s by a malicious version of Arino to play video games with the pre-teen version of Arino. So, how does the show translate into the game? It’s actually rather genius. I could go on and on about the show, but we’re not here to talk about that, let’s look at the game. It’s also been on the air since 2003, predating the Angry Video Game Nerd and, indeed, most of Let’s Play culture. To this day, I continue to discover buried games because of this show. It’s a fantastic premise that helped draw me into Japanese culture years ago when I first experienced it. Gameplay is broken up with segments where Arino goes and visits old arcades, tests out obscure hardware, or brings attention to lesser-known games of the era. All this is voiced over by an announcer who makes everything sound like a life-or-death situation. The Kachou, comedian Shinya Arino, plays old video games for several hours straight, often descending into despair as he’s beaten by the unforgiving mechanics of older titles. ![]() If you’re unfamiliar with the show, it’s pretty similar to a lot of YouTube Let’s Plays, but condensed into a 1 hour-ish program. Some of the titles here will seem extremely familiar. This is the first time I’ve actually gone back to Retro Game Challenge aware of some of the references it makes. That may sound unrelated, but Retro Game Challenge is actually a localization of the first game based on that show. Since then, however, I’ve become a fan of the Japanese show, Game Center CX. While I was beginning to stack up a collection of grey plastic cartridges, having a game that attempted to emulate the experience as it was back in the 1980’s was enthralling. I first experienced it during the formative years in my interest in retro games. I just backed Project Blue on Kickstarter kickstarter.I have a few attachments to Retro Game Challenge. Can’t wait!! This looks AMAZING! □□ 2 years ago It’s a really cool game for the DS, it’s a lot of fun to be able to play 8bit retro games, and also get challenged in them! However one downside to the game is that there is a little bit to much talking in between gameplay, a lot of meaningless blabber to sit through. You are also given the manual for each game. If you have trouble with any of the challenges, like figuring out how to earn extra points or find cheats and such you also unlock a Gamefan Magazine with each game where you can read about them. I managed to beat all the challenges for Robot Ninja Haggleman as well, I will continue the challenges tomorrow ^^ #7 Beat level 4 without dying, and #8 Beat the entire game. The first challenges of Robot Ninja Haggleman was quite easy, however the last two ones were tougher. ![]() The second game was Robot Ninja Haggle Man.Ī cool thing is that you get to see the original cartridges for the games and you’re also able to read about the story of the games. After beating all challenges of a game you unlock the freeplay for that game. The last challenge of Cosmic Gate was to score 200.000 points. The first challenges are quite easy, but the further you get the harder it becomes. ![]() The first game I was challenged in was Cosmic Gate.Įach game has 4 different challenges which you have to complete to continue on to the next game. It’s basically a re-visit to the early days of gaming, where a game master challenges you in all the games he played in his childhood (throughout the 80’s). Today I got Retro Game Challenge that I ordered from Ebay! I started playing it immediately and went through the first 8 challenges, it was hard to put this game down! ![]()
